What Does A Vaping Tax Have To Do With The Build Back Better Bill?

The short answer to the title of this blog is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! As usual, politicians and government agencies have the vaping industry in their crosshairs again, and unlike the FDA’s recent debacle that made the approval process for new vape devices to go to market, this time they’re going after your bank account. In a somewhat predictable move, on November 3rd, the House of Representatives snuck in a new federal tax on vaping products to what was supposed to be a national infrastructure bill excluding combustible tobacco products like…you guessed it….cigarettes.

What is more concerning is the current administration’s continued propaganda regarding “not raising taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 per year” while knowingly adding this tax to a relatively small group, the vaping community. Essentially this new tax will make a 60 ml bottle of e-liquid two to three times what it costs today, making it less expensive to smoke cigarettes than to vape, which by all accounts is clearly the safer option. Don’t get us wrong, vaping does indeed contain nicotine which is an addictive chemical, but smoking is proven to cause lung cancer, among other health problems. Clearly, this is a strategy by big tobacco to move the goalpost on vapers that have kicked smoking and get them back as customers because, let’s face it if it becomes more affordable to smoke than vape, why wouldn’t they switch back? To get into how the vaping tax will work, the exact wording of the bill states that for each milligram of nicotine, a 2.8 cent tax will be added, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it quickly adds up when you’re buying in bulk.
